Why SF Piano Works exists

One Region · One Call

Piano technicians tend to work alone. It's the nature of the trade - you're in someone's living room with a tuning hammer, not on a job site with a crew. Beyond conventions, monthly chapter meetings, and the Piano Technicians Guild Journal, most of us build our knowledge and our client relationships in isolation.

SF Piano Works exists to change that paradigm. We're a collective of independent technicians across the Bay Area, working independently yet together the way Ace Hardware stores do: each of us owns our own business, our own clients, and our own region, but we operate under one shared name, one standard of care, one phone number.

That means when you call, you're not gambling on whoever's available. You reach our coordinator who knows our individual specialties and territories, and who matches you with the right person for your piano and your neighborhood. And if your regular technician is on vacation, out sick, or simply booked, someone else in the collective already knows how we work and can step in, so your piano doesn't wait.

Independence

Every technician in SF Piano Works runs their own practice. We're not a franchise, and no one here is an employee dispatched to a job. We chose this model because it protects what makes a good piano technician good: the freedom to make judgment calls on the workbench or in your home, based on what your instrument actually needs, not a script.

What the collective gives us that going it alone never could is a team to lean on. A second pair of hands on a job that needs one. A colleague to text or call mid-appointment when something's not adding up. Real-time shared knowledge, not just what gets published once a year. We have each other's backs, and because of that, we have yours.

That's the whole idea: the independence of a solo craftsperson, with the reliability of a firm behind them.

The craftspeople

Our technicians.

Six regions, each carried by a technician who learns your instrument over the years. Meet them, then tap your region to reach yours.

Four decades
on the bench.

Vince has spent more than forty years inside pianos across the Bay Area. He founded SF Piano Works so that every region would have a trusted local tuner backed by a real team. Concert preparation and master-level restoration are booked through his own studio, Apollo Piano.
