DamppChaser Systems add heat or humidity as needed to maintain optimal stability. Pianos using these systems hold their tune longer .
High humidity can lead to sticking components, premature oxidation, and rust. Dryness leads to loose action components and keys, leading to rattling, as well as cracks in bridges and soundboards, and loose tuning pins.
Your Humidistat monitors the RH and activates the humidifier or dehumidifier to stabilize the wood in your piano. It works 24/7 for you, and for a lot less than your HVAC system.
The large black bucket on bottom right shows typical placement in upright piano. I usually install one dehumidifier in uprights, unless you're in a tropical climate like Maui, then I install two.
Keeping your home's humidity at 42% is not impossible, but it can be challenging. I prefer to discuss various options with each client, because I've made both ways work. Every situation is unique .
I typically install two dehumidifiers underneath your piano's soundboard, as well as the humidifier and control unit or humidistat. For pianos over 7' I might install a third dehumidifier, depending on conditions.
